CHALLENGE
Our client purchased the former hospice site with a view to altering and extending the building into a striking piece of architecture that would offer high quality nursing and dementia care.
Savills Architecture was commissioned to undertake the challenge and through careful consideration of costs vs outcomes, found that using the existing building compromised the design and use to deliver the brief. It was therefore decided to design a new build solution that would align tightly with the brief and offer the high quality care the business wanted to deliver through good design.

SOLUTION
Using the more immersive online tools, Savills Architecture were able to work up conceptual designs with the core client team in a 3D environment where the team could see how the design process evolved with key decisions being made.
As part of our brief, and working closely with the client team, the new care home must provide an attractive building that the local community and its new residents could be proud of. The building pays homage to the strong architectural styles found around Poole, emanating from the Art Deco movement of the 1930’s.
The collaboration of the client team included their preferred building contractor and Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) team to ensure that the buildability and sustainability of the building could be monitored during the design process to achieve the best build cost and an Excellent BREEAM rating.
After a detailed pre-application consultation period was carried out, a full planning application was submitted and consented, the building phase started shortly afterwards.

RESULTS
Marjorie House was opened in the Autumn of 2024 to new residents who need differing levels of nursing and dementia care. With carefully designed rooms, dining and day spaces, the building provides an open and light filled experience with views from many rooms and spaces across Poole Harbour and views of Brownsea Island.
