CHALLENGE

A rich brief and challenging location in the New Forest National Park. Our client asked Savills Architecture to design a replacement dwelling where the exterior required a vernacular appearance to suit the context whilst the interior needed an entertainment and singing space, the look and feel of an English family home, but with an air of contemporary architecture as you get closer to the building.

SOLUTION

Designed around the dynamism of a client’s individual needs, this high-performance bespoke home draws on traditional and modern aesthetics and spaces. A vernacular appearance required for its setting reveals its more contemporary nature on approach, unlocking vistas from spaces such as the double height acoustically modelled living hall, over the landscaped gardens towards the picturesque estuary beyond.

With a ground source heat pump backed up by an energy centre that has several banks of ground mounted PV panels, the building has a very low carbon emission due to excellent insulation with many passive solutions to help capture heat in the winter and shade in the summer.

RESULTS

The dwelling nestles well into its newly created landscape and offers wonderful views out to the wider landscape. Our client frequently uses the performance space for rehearsals and performances, which was specifically acoustically designed and tuned to suit their voice.
